Arch Window Curtains and Treatment Ideas

Arch Window Curtains and other Window Treatment Ideas

Arched windows present special challenges for window treatments. Arched windows have the rounded top that most curtains will not be able cover yet still expose the arch without special alterations.

One idea is to leave the arched portion exposed and install a sash curtain for the rectangular portion of the arch window. A sash curtain has the curtain rod in the window sill and is aligned with the top of the lower portion of the window. It is important that you line the sash curtain proportionally according to the architecture of the arched window. Typically, the sash is of a sheer or translucent material so that light can shine through and you can still see the borders of the arch window. By aligning the curtain rod with the top portion of the rectangular window, you will minimize the curtain rod obscuring the view should you open the curtains.

In addition to the sash curtain, you can also install a fabric fan curtain to cover the rounded portion of the arch window. This will take custom work and you will either need to hire someone or spend some time to make the curtain fit with the arch window. One method is to first stretch the fabric fans on a custom bent rod that fits the arch of your window. Then tie the fabric at the center, similar to a chignon. There great thing is that you can buy arched window kits especially designed for this purpose. The kits come with a curtain rod that is typically clear and can be easily bent. You also get clear clips that for will easily snap on the frame to hold the rod.

There are other arch window treatments other than curtains. Shades and blinds are also good window coverings to use. For the rectangular portion of the arched window, you can use either blinds or shades. However for the arched portion, you will probably use shades made of fabric. You can hang the window shade, such as a roman or balloon shade, on a curved rod. Because the rod is curved, you may have to have a custom designed shade to be able to drop or retract the shade. In some cases, you may not want to cover your arched window completely. You can use a swag or valance around the curved window rod to embellish the arched window but not cover it.

As you can see there are several window treatments solutions for you arched windows. Before you decide to cover the arched portion of your window, ask yourself if you will need to expose this portion in the figure. The reason is that most window treatments for the arched section usually do not allow you to open or close them on a regular basis. Therefore, if you want to have the arched section for open view, it is better to leave that open and just cover the rectangular portion.

Before you purchase window treatments for your arched window, make sure you do your research and understand how you will use the windows first. Then decide which sections you need to cover, if you need to cover it at all. With the beauty of arched windows, it is best to have the least amount of window covering as possible so that you can enjoy the windows for what they are.
