Window Cornices

Window Cornices

A window cornice is typically an ornamental framework that covers the window rod. A cornice is considered a top treatment similar to that of a valance. However, cornices are different in that they are typically made of a solid framework such as wood, brass or some other material other than fabric. Cornices can be covered with similar fabric used for curtains and look similar to a valance. Cornices are often elaborate and were more popular in the old days than now mainly do to the fact that cornices can harbor dust and microbes.

Cornice Uses
The main function of window cornices is to hide the window rod. Unlike valances, cornices are typically not used to change the proportions of a window. The widths of cornices are within a standard range and the design doesn’t have shapes such as cascades or waves that can change the look of the window completely. Similar to valances, cornices are used to decorate the top of a window treatment. For homes that have decorated ceilings, cornices of similar design and shape can be a good match.

Cornice Types
Cornices can come in different shapes, materials and fabric. In terms of variation in shape, cornices may have different edge treatments. Overall, cornices are rectangular in shape but the bottom edge can be straight, wavy or some more of a custom edge. In terms of materials, cornices can be made with wood, foam, plastic or fabric. Cornices made of solid ornamental wood are typically not covered with fabric. These wood cornices can be very expensive and can cost many hundreds of dollars. Some may even be hand carved. Other materials such as plywood, plastic or foam typically will have a fabric cover. The fabric should match the decorative style of the window treatments below.

Making Cornices
Some people choose to make cornices. Simple rectangular cornices are fairly easy to make. Make sure you pick out a material that is light and sturdy. Another thing to think about is you want to use materials that will resist mildew. The reason is that the window area will typically have a lot of moisture buildup, especially during the winter time. If you’ve made your curtains or drapes and know some basic handy work, then it may be good to make your own cornice. However, if you just want to make your own cornice to save money, but you don’t have particular skills in making cornices, you are better off buying one.

Buying Cornices
You can buy cornices online as well as at your local hardware and home interior decoration store. Cornices are not as popular these days due to the fact that there is dust build up. Dust is typically difficult to clean on the top of cornices. Additionally, unlike drapes or even valances, cornices can not be washed. For those of you thinking of buying a cornice, make sure you do your research offline and talk to decoration experts. Also, look into valances and other alternatives as well. Otherwise, cornices can be a great addition to your current window treatment.
