Country Style Curtains

Country Style Curtains

The term “country style curtains” is used to describe curtains of a “country” style. However, this style is not specifically defined and can range fairly wide in décor. In general, country style describes a relaxed life outside of the modern stressful city living. Country style curtains can use old linen, field flower designs, quilt material, scalloped edges, and simple embellishments such as swags.

The best way to describe country style curtains is to briefly discuss a few popular designs. These are: country French curtains, country plaid curtains, country ruffled curtains and country lace curtains.

Country French Curtain
One type of popular country French curtain is incorporating the traditional Toile de Jouy design. Toile de Jouy generally includes neoclassical scenes and people from the 18th and 19th centuries. Traditionally, curtains are printed in single colors (blue, red, violet or sepia) using vegetables dyes on an off-white ground of un-dyed calico.

Country Plaid Curtain
Plaid is a popular design for country style curtains. The design on plaid curtains are similar to those on the plaid shirts that you see. These include box designs with two or three color combinations. Plaid curtains give your room a simple rustic feel and fits well in rooms with wood frames.

Country Ruffled Curtain
A ruffle is simply a long strip of fabric gathered to frill along one or both sides. Single-edged ruffles are gathered along one edge and frill on only one side. Double edged ruffles are sometimes gathered down the center of the strip which creates two frills of equal depth. Ruffles are embellishments for the outside edges of country style curtains.

Country Lace Curtain
Country lace curtains can either be hung over your current curtains or by themselves. Lace curtain designs originated from the Victorian era and provides a traditional look for your windows. A country lace curtain can be hung like a sash curtain which is about half the height of the window. Sometimes a laced valance and a half length lace country style curtain is a perfect combination.

There are many more types of country style curtains that have not been discussed here. The best way for you to learn about country style curtains is to do your research online, look at pictures of various designs and also to visit your local window coverings store. As mentioned here, country style curtains are more than just one type of curtain.
