Interior Window Shutters
Interior window shutters are shutters that are placed inside of the house. Interior shutters typically serve two main purposes. First, they help to moderate lighting inside a home and second, they offer a decorative look to your windows. In some situations, interior shutters also offer insulation protection by keeping the heat inside during cold days and keeping the sunlight out during hot days. Although with central heating and air conditioning, shutters are serving a smaller role
in insulation these days. Interior shutters can also offer protection against harsh weather but not as well as exterior shutters. For example if you want to protect your windows against hail, interior shutters may only protect the hail from coming into your home but the hail may still shatters your windows. This is why interior shutters typically function more like standard window treatments and serve more of a decorative purpose while exterior window shutters typically offer protection to harsh weather.
Interior shutters can be made of several popular types of materials including wood, vinyl, hardened fabric, aluminum or metal. Before choosing the type of material for your internal shutters, you may want to consider the functional and decoration needs of your shutters. For moderating light, plantation shutters or louvered shutters are the best solution. Louvered shutters have panels that can open and close similar to blinds. This functionality allows you to close your shutters, yet still allow a certain amount
of light through and offering some privacy to your home. Louvered shutters can also be closed so that they block out the light completely.
Plantation shutters are a popular form of louvered shutters. Plantation shutters originated in the Southern US where there were a wide variety of cotton plantations at the time. These shutters have wide louvers and are typically painted white. The main purpose of plantation shutters was to shield out the strong sunlight while still allowing ventilation and protection.
Wood is probably the most popular material for interior shutters as most homes have wooden architecture somewhere around their windows. Wood offers a warm feeling and fits well esthetically around most window frames. Vinyl is also a good choice that can be made to look similar to wood but with more sturdiness and resistant to cracking. Take your time to look around and figure out the right interior window shutters for your room.
