Roller Shutters

Roller shutters are mostly used for protection and security. Roller shutters are used widely for commercial applications in addition to home use. Many are used to protect entry ways to warehouses or stores. However, we will only discuss roller shutters as it pertains to window treatments and coverings for the home use here.
Roller Shutters

Most roller shutters have three main components. First, on top of the window is the head assembly box. This assembly box contains an axle, motor and various components used for lowering and raising the shutter. Second, there is the curtain of the roller shutter. This curtain can be made of various materials. Typically, it is made of aluminum or a sturdy metal that are cut in slats so that it can be rolled up and straightened. Depending on the application of the roller shutter, the curtain can be re-enforced or thickened to offer extra protection or insulation. Third, there are the guides of the roller shutters that hold the curtain in place. These guides make sure that the shutters do not sway during heavy winds.

The advantage of roller shades over storm panels or other exterior window coverings is that when they are retracted, they are invisible from the outside. Unlike louvered window shutters which allows light to shine through even when the shutters are closed, roller shutters usually will not serve this purpose. Additionally, roller shutters usually are not meant to be decorative but you can find curtains that match the exterior of the house.

Roller shutters can be operated manually or automatically. For manual operation, a handle and winder are usually attached to the interior wall so that when you wind it, the roller shutters will close from the outside. Automatic operation allows you to open and close the shutters with a simple flick of a switch.

When choosing shutters for you home, you may want to consider roller shutters for its invisible when rolled up feature. Some homes may not be suited for shutters that hang next to the window for many reasons. In those situations, roller shutters are a good solution. However, don¡¯t expect roller shutters to make your home look beautiful from the outside. They are mostly used to protect and cover your windows when you need it.
