Roman Shades

Roman Shades

Roman shades are an elegant form of window shades. The look is classic and European. Roman shades are usually made of fabric that fold to the top when opened. There are two different types of roman shades. The classic style has overlapping flaps when closed while the flat style closes with the fabric straight.

When most people think of roman shades, they are thinking of the style that has overlapping flaps. Often times, the design of window shades resemble popular fashion. You can think of the overlapping flaps as those found in a beautiful dress. It is this elegance that sets roman shades apart from other types of shades. Perhaps balloon shades is in the same caliber of decorative feel.

Similar to cellular shades, roman shades offer excellent insulation functionality. When the shades are lowered, the air in the flaps keeps the heat from leaving through the windows during the winter and keeps the heat from entering the windows during the summer. Roman shades offers a more softer and classic feel to the sometimes more contemporary look of cellular shades.

Roman shades block out light during the day. They offer a translucent feel so that light can come through but you can’t see out the windows when the shades are closed. Because of the different types of fabric and colors available, you can choose the material that best fits the color of your room as well as light blocking qualities.

You can also make roman shades. Many people purchase the fabric and sew the material to make their own shades. Roman shades don’t require specific mountings. They can be drawn up via a cord strung through the sides of the shade. You really can use any type of fabric that suits your preferences. Sheer fabrics are popular since you probably want your room to have some lighting during the day. However, for maximum privacy, you may want a heavier fabric.

Roman shades are also easy to maintain. Your choice of material for roman shades will determine how easy they are to clean. Make sure you choose fabric that does not attract dust and pollen. Depending on the fabric, you can usually wash the shades in the washing machine and iron them afterwards. Some fabrics may need dry cleaning. There are many different vendors online that sell roman shades. You should do your research and look at the various designs and styles available to you.
