Sliding Glass Door Window Treatment

Sliding Glass Door Window Treatments

Sliding glass doors are similar to patio doors in that they are large windows that allow quite a bit of light through. Window coverings for sliding glass door windows range from standard vertical blinds to decorative drapes. The most important thing to remember is that you need to choose a window treatment that allows easy access in and out. Also, not all sliding glass windows open to the outside. Some open to another room. In those cases, you want to choose a window treatment that matches both rooms.

A few popular window coverings for sliding glass doors include vertical blinds, curtains honeycomb shades and shoji screens.

Vertical blinds are the standard window treatment for sliding glass doors. They block out light when fully closed and allow easy entry and exit when fully open. There are many kinds of colors, textures as well as degree of light penetration to choose from so don’t hesitate to explore different options.

Curtains are also a popular choice for sliding glass doors. When using curtains you might want to make sure you suspend the curtains high above the frame and extend the track or rod clear of it on either side so that the fabric does not get caught in the doors. Because sliding glass doors often open in one direction, you have to install curtains that part in one direction and not in the middle.

Honeycomb or cellular shades are good for insulation as they have pockets of air inside. They also can give you the translucent effect where some light is let through to brighten up the room while giving you privacy. It is suggested that you get vertically sliding shades that move to one side so that you have full access in and out of your sliding glass door. If you do choose horizontal shades, make sure that you mount the high enough such that when you pull up the shades, it won’t bother someone from walking in and out of the sliding glass door.

Another elegant window treatment for sliding glass door is to incorporate a shoji screen in front of the window. A shoji screen is a Japanese style screen made of rice paper and wood. The advantage of this solution is that you don’t need to draw the blinds or curtains since the shoji screen is incorporated into the window. However, if you want to see through your sliding glass door often, then this may not be the best solution. It will depend on your personal taste and functionality concerns.

Again, when choosing window treatments for sliding glass doors, consider your ease of entry and exit first. Then decide on the type of window covering based on function and decoration style.
