Solar Shades

Solar Shades | Solar Screens

Solar shades or sometimes called solar screens help shield out the glare of the sun while allowing in as much of the window view as possible. Although all window shades block sunlight to some degree, solar shades are specifically designed for that purpose while allowing you to look out your window.

For optimal light shielding performance, you want to have your solar shades outside of your window. However, this may not be convenient for everyone and is not ideal for areas with harsh weather. The main purpose of solar shades is to block out the glare of the sun and some UV rays. By blocking out the rays from the sun, solar shades help keep your room cool. During the winter however, solar shades will not insulate your room as much as cellular or roman shades will.

Another benefit that solar shades have over most other traditional shades is that they are designed for you to look at the view outside. They are not translucent but transparent. Therefore, you can have the solar shades lowered and still see everything outside your window. Because they are transparent, someone from the outside can look in but their view will be obstructed quite a bit. If you want complete privacy, you will have to go with another type of shade. However, if you have windows that are situated high up then it is pretty difficult for someone to look inside.

You can sometimes use a combination of solar shades and curtains. During the day if you want to see the view but don’t want the sunlight glaring in, you can lower the solar shades to block out the sun. During the evening you can pull back your window curtains for the decorative look and feel inside. In fact, have only a solar shade during the evening may not be aesthetically pleasing. Most solar shades are made of polyester and are black in color. During the evening, you probably want to have some other window treatment or covering that brightens your room and makes it feel cozy.

Many people also consider motorizing their solar shades so that at the flick of a switch, the solar shades can be lowered or raised. Solar shades are very versatile and work well for what they are used for. When you are choosing window coverings for your home, you may want to consider solar shades for those purposes.
