Velvet Drapes

Thick, red velvet drapes add a lush and dramatic look to your window frame and room. Usually, velvet drapes are used for the fall and winter. It is important not to confuse satin drapes with velvet drapes. Satin drapes are typically made from silk and are admired for their shine and smoothness. Velvet drapes are desired for their warmth and richness.
Velvet Drapes

Velvet drapes can accommodate your modern or retro design tastes. Traditionally, red velvet drapes are luxurious and opulent. Furnishings that have gold or brass accents will go well with red or dark colored velvet drapes. However, if your design ideas are modern, you can opt for light colored velvet drapes. White velvet drapes go well with contemporary furniture with plastic and exposed metal legs. As you can see, velvet drapes can satisfy most design preferences.

The velvet material is similar to that of a deer antler. It is soft and furry to the touch. Velvet is made from cotton and polyester blends and is sometimes used to cover furniture and various items. When made into a drape, the velvet should be heavier and lined with a backing that will resist the sunlight and fading. Fine quality velvet drapes may have blind-stitched cotton linings and hems.

Whatever material you decide for your drapes, remember to first decide on the function of your drapes. If you want to have your drapes close during the day but allow in some light, then you actually want sheer drapes or curtains. They are used to moderate light during the day. If you want your drapes to keep out the cold of winter days, try thermal insulated drapes. These drapes can also be velvet on the inside but usually will have an insulation barrier on the side facing the window. Velvet drapes work best for cool to cold temperatures in areas as they are typically heavy and keep in the warmth. They also look nice when bottom hem drapes the ground. There are many online vendors selling velvet drapes, however it is best if you can go feel the material at a store nearby before you decide. Make sure that the velvety material will not come off or cause allergies.
